Cheryl Mangin
A new resident of Golden Valley, AZ as of 2024, Cheryl developed a great interest and fondness for the donkeys of Oatman, AZ during the Covid lock-down in 2020. When she adopted Sally she needed a place to keep her and she was housed at a local sanctuary in Golden Valley. There she met Phil and Margaret and they became almost instant friends. When the empty lot became available right next door to Phil and Margaret there was little hesitation, and within a year a manufactured home was purchased. Between the two lots there is around 2.5 acres of land. In November we started building a corral on Phil and Margaret's land (since it is fully fenced) and Phil and Margaret purchased an ample storage shed for use as a hay shed. Cheryl had an old horse pen refurbished by Bob Biglay of Back to Basics Rescue, Inc of Kingman, AZ and Rich Dotson put a roof on it. Margaret, Phil and Cheryl spent the better part of two months digging holes, painting plywood, and purchasing all the necessary equipment to make the rescue a reality. Cheryl has one son, Noel who just recently retired from San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Chief with 29 years on the job. He is married to his wife of 29 years, Renee, and between them have 4 children, and a bunch of grandkids!

Phil and Margaret Albanese
Phil and Margaret Albanese have been married for over 30 years and have one son, Nathan, a graduate of Cal State San Bernardino with a major in history. He has earned his teaching credential, and is working as a substitute teacher in Riverside County. Phil and Margaret developed a love of Arizona and purchased the home here in 2021. With a background in Firefighting, they are both now retired. They were heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of American when their son was younger. Phil is a very talented in leather works. He made the donkey's leather name tags for their halters, and has done leather repair for our farrier. You will be seeing some of his creations at our events. Margaret is a multi-talented woman, and a little dynamo! Whatever the task at hand, she jumps right in and will get it done.

The Rescue
Since our humble beginnings in January of 2024, we have added a 10x20 lean-to with attacted shade structure, another corral measuring 2500 square feet, a 12X20 Feed Barn, and another 12X20 open shade shed. We are hoping to add on to the exisiting 10X20 lean-to and double it in size in the coming year (2026). We have chose to keep our rescue small for lack of volunteers and funding. If this should change, we would happily accept a few more donkeys. We never want to be in a position that we cannot provide complete care for our residents. Presently we only have two part time volunteers, which both do great work, but the bulk of the maintenance, training, feedings, and time spent with the donkeys falls to Margaret and Cheryl.
